What is Holding Space

So often we hear the words ‘holding space’ and today, someone asked me what I meant when I referred to it in a class..

Recently I attended a workshop in Bali with the most beautiful man, Alex Tusk from Breathing Cold Bali. This two day experience was around breath work and ice baths and weaving these tools into our everyday lives. For many, the thought of surrendering to the breath and the master, known as ice, is confronting and somewhat challenging. For me, the thought I sitting in a freezing cold container or ice cold water for 10 minutes wasn’t going to be a walk in the park!!

The techniques that we learnt over the two days were extraordinary, but even more than that, the way that Alex held space for each on of us is something that cannot be learned. Alex allowed us the space for what arrived to be witnessed and felt on such a deep level. The way he held space for me over the two days allowed me to release more than I ever knew possible.

The greatest gift we can offer to someone is the simple act of holding space for them. It's about creating a safe and non-judgmental environment where they can fully express themselves, without fear or hesitation.

Holding space means setting aside our own agendas and egos, and truly being present for another person. It's about offering our undivided attention, compassion, and understanding. It's a beautiful practice that allows others to feel heard, valued, and supported.

When we hold space, we embrace the power of silence and listen with an open heart. We resist the urge to jump in with advice or solutions, recognizing that sometimes all someone needs is to be heard and acknowledged. It's in those moments of quiet connection that deep healing and growth can occur.

Holding space isn't limited to the tough times. It's also about celebrating the joys and successes of others. It's cheering them on, sharing in their happiness, and being a source of encouragement. It's about recognizing their accomplishments and helping them shine even brighter.
